Stoneware is dense pottery that is fired at high temperatures to make it impermeable to liquids.
Like most types of pottery, stoneware is largely made of clay. However, stoneware is stronger and more durable than other types of pottery because it is fired at higher temperatures and is coated in a glaze that improves its hardness. Because it is fired at temperatures between 2,000°F and 2,370°F, stoneware can be microwaved, washed in the dishwasher or put in the oven without shattering or exploding.
